As I wrote in the last post - woxy.com premiered "Wolflike They Are" on Friday afternoon (EST) on their daily new music feature AIRCHEXX. I'm on rotation on woxy.com!!!

There was an encore of the artists from Friday's Airchexx on the morning of January 8th at 9:30 am EST.

These wonderful people at this AMAZING radio station featured another track from my demo "Wolflike They Are" - "At Least Like Melissa." Check out the playlist here!

I can't thank them enough so in return I'll be trying to send everyone I know to them - Including you!

I suggest that you all listen and support this great station - woxy.com!

Otherwise - I'm home from the Fashion Police Studio and David and I have recorded two AMAZING new tracks for this secret split vinyl that I have been talking about.

During this one week long session we have accomplished a LOT!

I may have programmed the best drum pattern thus far in the history of Sara Culler. I had the honor of having MR. Daniel "Gold Star" Jansson (currently member of Consequences and earlier of Anna Ternheims backing band and even earlier in an early edition of David & the Citizens - The Grass for Parks) doing backing vox on my track together with David and Mango (who has a beautiful voice)! Daniel also played some space guitar (with me on space echo).

My song had the working title "They Could See You Little Girl" but after everything came into place and beautiful layers of harmony vocals were added, I felt that the title may be "Keep the Silence". David thinks his song will be named "The Feeling Remains" - He is having similar issues with the title.

I also had time to add vox on a great song that is a collaboration - secret for now but not for long.

THE BIGGEST THANX TO Niklas Nelldal and Magnus Josefsson!

Oh - And I FINALLY got a hold of the Headlights album I've been searching for sooo long - three quarters of a year almost… I LOVE IT!!!

Will be back soon!

woxy.com

woxy.com

I’ve been played on the radio again!!! This time it was woxy.com that had the extremely good taste in playing my song “Wolflike They Are”!!!

Check out the evidence here.

Otherwise – Great song creating and evolving in the studio today. Going home now but I’ll talk to you soon!

Buy,
Sara

Ps. I don’t miss Malmö… Ds.

In the Studio - Again

I’m in the Fashion Police Studio in Stockholm recording a song for a split vinyl due out sometime soon in another country than Sweden – release secret for now… David is on the other side...

The are also electricity guys here… Loud drilling in concrete walls... ! … I’m actually thinking of inviting them to drill on my recording. Could be the missing effect...

I’m seriously considering my future this year. Touring a LOT will be a must and also getting SOMEONE to release my fullength debut… If ANYONE knows of a great band in need of an opening act – HOLLER! I’m listing bands to contact.

There will be a new download here soon. A pure Sara Culler song. Probably one of my best ones. Check back frequently to find out when.

Currently listening to a LOT of: David and I playing various instruments, Oppenheimer, Headlights, Via Audio, Thom York.

Now I’ve got a date with Battery – More drum programming – Then some serious keys…

Bye for now.

Highlights of 2006

I wanted to finish this year by blogging about my highlights - there have been MANY this year! Sometimes many under the same category. Ooohhh boy - this is going to be a looong list and SOOO MANY NAMES TO THANK!!!!!! I may add stuff if I freak out when I find that I forgot something or someone… If I forgot someone I'm sorry - My head is NEVER where it should be... Let me know OK?

Here we go - In no particular or chronological order!

This years debut: Well - I made it! And I made it all the way to the Forfey Festival on Northern Ireland! The best festival in the world! Played a great 35 minutes for a wonderful audience, which brings me to the next post.

This years live gig: Again -
Forfey Festival @ Willie Ramblers in Enniskillen, Northern Ireland! Juliana Hatfield and the venue KB - all regards to you but the feedback in a country you've never been in, the AMAZING people!!! Matt, Dianne, Dave (x how many? - there were many Dave's!), Lee, Neil, Jamie, Johnny, Mike, Helen - gosh I don't want to forget anyone but you were sooo many, so professional and so kind!

This years opening opportunity: When I opened for Juliana Hatfield @ KB. Amazing to finally be on that stage with my own music. I have done backing vocals on that stage sooo many times...

This years "I surprised myself": Covering Madonna's "Who's That Girl". Download here for free. Don't forget my other downloads - here.

This years studio: Fashion Police Studios

This years release: "At Least Like Melissa" on "Fingertips: Unwebbed". My Demo "Wolflike They Are" - Over 600 sold and a few promoted copies and still selling... To buy go here.

This years mystery: All the 300 new visitors I get every day - Who are you, where do you come from and how did you find me?

This years nice people @ radio stations: Lisa Wall - P4, Pelle Gustafsson - P3 Lab, Stuart Flanagan - The Signal, Stephen McCauley - Electric Mainline on BBC Northern Ireland, Geoff Lloyd - Virgin Radio.

This years "meet": Finally, after a lot of MySpace chatting, Bryce Kushnier AKA Vitaminsforyou getting his acts together and coming to Malmö! Yo La Tengo and crew after Malmö gig - WOW :O)

This years "being in the right place at the right time": Meeting Yo La Tengo and crew + getting on the guestlist for their Copenhagen show.

This years "being in the right place at the wrong time": Trying to see Oppenheimer and finally meet Mr. Rocky O'Reilly has been hard. First of all, David and I should have been in the US of A when they had their first tour there. I would have actually been able to meet them in my other hometown, Dallas, Texas… Unfortunately we were "robbed" on our promised advance so we never made the trip… I played the Forfey Festival on August the 26th - Rocky and Oppenheimer came home from the tour on August the 30th… I was in London - doing backing vocals with David & the Citizens at Dublin Castle - Oppenheimer played there a couple of nights later… … … Not being able to make the Yo La Tengo Copenhagen show…

This years music: Oppenheimer, David Fridlund (new solo album tba), Futia Expo 79, Vitaminsforyou, Headlights, Via Audio, Kyle Andrews, MEW (can't get enough this year either), Electric President, The Album Leaf, Lali Puna, Imogen Heap (and Frou Frou), Sufjan Stevens, Mates of State, Goddamn Electric Bill, Yo La Tengo, all the bands at Forfey Festival, Lisa Germano (always close to my heart) Cat Power, David & the Citizens' new album and many, MANY more!

This years list of people close to my heart: David Fridlund, Rocky O'Reilly, Shaun Robinson, Jeremy Schlosberg, Mangnus Josefsson AKA Mango, Anders Mortensen, Steve Glenn, Bryce Kushnier, Stephen McCauley, Lisa Wall, Pelle Gustafsson, Scott Dixon, Ginny Hall and family, Matt & everyone at the Forfey Festival, Niklas @ Fashion Police, Jo Barker with colleagues & friends ;o), Stephen Kempner, Kalle Metz (for meeting me), Anneke, Andrew (Sleep The Clock Around), Anna x 2, Jamie in London/NI (you did brighten up that evening :o), Malin (country girl), Justin and the people at Weekender Club, Karin @ SOFA, Daniel Jansson, Johan Sigerud, Jonas & Blood Music, Marc Xavier LeBlanc AKA DJ Bones, Avi Roig, Totte Lundgren & KB, Annette Persson and Adrian Recordings (Annette for selling demos for me and A.R for server space), Jesper Kumberg (for being there), Niklas Herrström (for helping), Rose, Andy, all the people with comments on my blog, all my MySpace friends, Tomas & Johanna, Peter and David and David and Therese and Hanna, Viktoria AKA Mangobruden (for nice words and photo!), Mine, Mina, Joel Fridlund for computer and last but not least - Family and friends.

This years horrible fact: Global warming and its effects…

This years evil people: The ones that have been and are wolflike...

This years WORST namedropping list: THIS ONE!!!

This years love (like every year): David Fridlund

Nudie Café - Tokyo

Nudie Café

So - one of the songs from my first demo ~ Five Song Demo ~  "A Story Full" has been featured on a compilation that was playing a couple of weeks in honor of and for this event called Nudie Café - A Swedish Style Event (they apparently even had Absolute Vodka)!!! The CD and my song played a few weeks in Café Pause a cool café in Tokyo, Japan!! The playlists of all the compilations where on the placements on the tables! BIG THANX to Marc Xavier LeBlanc (aka DJ Bones).

Now I thought this was a bit more fun than reading about my snotty nose but if you insist - hop down to the post before this one and read about my current status...

Still waving from a far to keep you safe from my fluelike cold...

*sara

War against the flue...

I've got the flue. I've been home and in the "office" since the 28th but I'm down with some fluelike cold... High fever, cough, cold blisters, Rudolf nose - You name it - I've got it...
Cold Nose
Everything has been put on hold - Even my surprise to you all... We'll just have to wait and see what happens after this weekend...

I really hope you all can forgive me for this - I don't want you to think that I'm boring and so on...

On the road

Hey guys.
Sorry for not updating my blog here - but I'm out on tour with David & the Citizens (unfortunately not playing my own stuff) and will not be back in the office (read home) until November 28th. Hope that you'll stick with me even though I'm not entertaining you at the moment.  :O)
Hugs,
Sara

A Release

OK, ok. I'll put it to you straight. "At Least Like Melissa" is now featured on a compilation CD that the wonderful FINGERTIPS MUSIC has put out! The CD is called "Fingertips: Unwebbed" and is a collection of 13 songs from 13 of the BEST independent artists featured on the Fingertips Music site during it's first three years of existence.

Read more about the CD here and for online liner notes go here.

It's an HONOR for me to be on it and I do want to thank Jeremy, the man behind this great and amazing site, for actually liking Melissa :O)

I'll hopefully put a picture of the CD up here soon.

Happy Hugs,
Sara

My Gig at KB

Hey.

The gig went great. At least David thought so. I thought it was OK but had some trouble with technical stuff… My vintage Japanese distortion (I call it Kamikaze distortion) decided to NOT WORK in the third song… I forgot to put the capo on the right fret… When I was to restart the song my digi porta didn't want to re-start… … … So A few words got lost in the beginning of the last song… Overall people said they liked the show a LOT. My friends said that the sound wasn't that good - the backtracks MUCH too loud which kind of buried the vocals in the soundscape… One good thing was that I sold ALL my demos!!! I only brought "wolflike they are" but now they're all gone so I have to fix some new ones for my next show!

One of the people in the audience -
Viktoria - AKA Mangobruden - posted a blog about the Juliana Hatfield show and she mentioned me as well. She took this picture and if you click it you can read what she had to say about the show (in Swedish).

Sara Culler KB

For you non-Swedes:
Sara Culler was the support act. It sounded good. If I were to categorize her she would end up somewhere in-between Frida Hyvönen and Anna Ternheim. This will maybe become something. A pleasant listening.

Juliana her self was REALLY nice. She gave some great inputs about the music business - She's been around a LONG time so I HONESTLY respect her. I haven't really listened to her solo stuff that much. I borrowed "Become What You Are" a few times at the library. She gave me her new album and her address so that I can send her my music. I'll be listening to it today!

This coming week there may be a possibility that I'll be posting a LOT of news!!!

Take care,
Sara

Gig day + Vitaminsforyou

So today is gig day. Let's see what my hometown goes for. A little refresher:

Sara Culler Live @ KB - Opening for Juliana Hatfield - Doors open at 20.00 - Show starts at 21.00 - Fee 100 SEK.

Yesterday I went to see a show that I've waited for a looong time now. Bryce Kushnier and his
Vitaminsforyou!!! It was great! As expected… The sound was a bit on the loud side which kind of made the vocals a bit harder to find in the soundscape but STILL a truly great show!

Bryce and his friend Sara will be staying to see me play tonight! That's an honor :O) We'll be having them at our place tonight before Bryce continues off to Spain tomorrow for a gig on November 11th.

Got to go now - Today is also STRESS day…

Hugs,
Sara

Seventeen again!

Yo La Tengo

So after thirteen years of desperate longing I finally got to see Yo La Tengo yesterday! The thing is that I've missed them every time they've visited Malmö… But now -finally! They played a two hour set with an amazing blend of old and new. I haven't heard that much of the new album but MAN! AMAZING albums like "May I Sing with Me", "Painful", "I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One" and "And then Nothing Turned Itself Inside-out" + various cassettes have been triggering the musical part of my brain since I was 15 years old. NO band has the dynamics and the skills to master such a wide variety of musical forms and figures as Yo La Tengo. The nostalgic and soft "drone-ish" songs counter the punk and sharp-edged counter the pure pop yet keeping mind-blowing melodies and harmonies all the way through! Captivating!!!

The last two encores they took requests. I felt something bubbling inside… I didn't dare at first. When I was seventeen I could scream my lungs out just to hear a song at a show but that was a long time ago… I finally took the leap and yelled "Detouring America With Horns"!!! Ira said:
- "Polls are closed" … and then they went off stage. When they entered the last time He said:
- "We will only be doing two more songs" … then the last song came and he said:
- "The last request came from somewhere over here and pointed towards me"!!!
THEY freakin' played my request!!!!!! Detouring America With Horns!!!

And it doesn't end here...   :O)

Today I had a coffee date with together with David, his dad, David's cousin and his girlfriend. On my way there I ran into Yo La Tengo!!! I HAD to stop and chat - so I did for about 15 minutes!!! I mostly talked to their keyboard extra and guitar tech. Ira was there too but concerned with car cash I think. I complimented them on their show, the AMAZING guitar tech and explained how long I've wanted to see them and that I finally got to yesterday (on borrowed money). They offered to put me on the guest list in Copenhagen together with David!!! I HAD TO TURN IT DOWN BECAUSE WE DIDN'T HAVE MONEY TO GET THERE!!! … … …

Anyway… … … Grrrrr… … … We chatted about music and the US of A compared to Sweden and how I want to move back and actually BE ABLE to find a part-time job and have time to focus on music at the same time… They were interested in my music so we chatted about MySpace as well and so on… Right before I left I had actually sent them a MySpace message - Big THANX and so on…

When I arrived at the coffee date I was all jittery - like a teenager - star struck ;O) Just like the good old days when you allowed yourself to completely and excessively worship and devote yourself to music in that shameless kind of way! I'll try to stick to that feeling. You are as old as you make yourself and I intend NOT to get older for some time… Right now I am seventeen again!

Georgia, Ira, James, X-tra keys man and technician (sorry I never got you're names) THANK YOU FOR A WONDERFUL 24 HOURS :O)

About a Girl

I know this girl. She's giving up. She practically doesn't exist.
They've mashed her and squashed her, leaving her somewhat transparent.
She has tried the speak and spell for years but nothing worked. She tried to blame herself and not the world. She has tried to save the world but not herself. It's eating up her guts, all empty. Deserves not the food already. The ice cold truth rises at dawn and sleeps with her at night.
Could they even see their wrongs, how could they even say she's wrong?
They're tearing up her world in shreds and leaving nothing but the shallow truth - she's ill.
But gazing deeper one can see - the lamest hearts of tragedy. They can't face the fact they've acted cruel. Therefore she's ill and empty too.

What shall this poor girl do? I'm behind her and if it weren't for the oceans that separate us then I'd force it all to stop.

STOP!

Hey - Live Pics!

As the days pass I realize that November 9th is sneaking up on me. Now WHAT is happening on November 9th? Exactly. I will be opening for Miss Juliana Hatfield at KB in Malmö, Sweden. The show starts at 9.00 PM. Put it down in you pocket calendar and make it a date ;o)

Well - better late than never - and to tie these pieces together:

I have now received some photos from my live on stage solo debut at the Forfey Festival - Willie Ramblers's, Enniskillen, Northern Ireland. The pictures are in chronological order and taken mostly from the beginning of my show. This you can tell by the fact that I only played acoustic guitar on the first two songs :O)

The fabulous Amy Millar took all the pictures.

SILENCE!!!

"The calm before the storm". "Silence is golden". "Silence is the virtue of fools". "No person is your friend who demands your silence, or denies your right to grow".

What is it? The silence. It can be different things but at this time its twofold.

First of all. I usually see low paced periods of my life as a period of growth, a process of change, evolution within myself. I used to go to dance school when I was younger. Training to be a dance teacher. I spent about 9 ½ hours a week in the dance studio dancing and doing yoga. During this time I learned that the mind is quicker at picking up new moves or paces. Much quicker than the body itself. I could suffer for weeks when my intellectual mind knew what to do but my body just didn't seem to follow… Suddenly - sometimes even a month later - everything just clicked. Symbiosis. I still do yoga and it, even more, deepens the understanding of your body vs. mind…

This is a thing I tend to think back at now that my days of dance are over due to a knee injury and blood clog (believe it or not - bicycle accident)… When I worry that I won't be able to write a good song again or if I feel like "it just HAS to happen today - a record deal has to happen today!" and I get maniacally stuck at the computer contacting, e-mailing - BLOGGING… … I remind myself of the time things need to soak in. Our bodies are micro cosmoses - If we can't access a microscope then switch on the news. The same things are occurring there as on the skin or in your immune system. You probably think "what the heck is she babbling about now???"… Well the thing is - all people are pretty much alike. I sometimes need things to sink in - a looong time - things need to grow on me. I have to understand that the same goes for everyone else. Not necessarily meaning my songs need to grow on an A&R guy at a label. I mean that things have to take time. Like sometimes our universe or the actual world we live in needs the time to adjust - not necessarily the people - the environment… Therefore - the news reflects what goes on in the world and the microscope reflects what goes on in/on our bodies and ours minds - we create the news the micro cosmos creates what we are. We are all alike so we tend to act similar to things that are basic.

Silence

Why this constant need for music. I'm in a period of my life where I need music all the time. When I'm biking, writing, contemplating - you name it. Is this need a substitute for a physical being? I don't think so… I sometimes want to have music when out with David - walking. My take on this is the following. I think my need, probably yours and many more people's needs as well, are based upon the fact that the world is a noise filled place. We are constantly surrounded by sounds. Involuntarily. Therefore we choose to dissolve into our own substitute for quietness. This is my own take but sometimes I just plainly feel like hearing something. Something that's warm. Musical sounds are warm compared to the sounds around us when outside. For example. I like walking/biking at the ocean shore. The immense amount of water makes sound travel quicker but it also adds LOTS of treble. Sounds turn cold, hard and unfriendly. Therefore I tend to choose my own environmental sounds. Sounds that I much easier can relate and relax to...

All this brings me to thinking - Musicians? Are we - in this new, noisy world - the creators of the "new silence"?

Well - the mind wanders… My body needs to wander in to the living room and add piano to a track. Piano that my mind knows how to play but my fingers just haven't adapted to it yet… It's all about time…

What did it look like in the studio?

Well. Here are some pics from my Fashion Police Studio session in Stockholm last month. So you can see what it looked like... Not detailed... A really old camera with beautiful pics but difficult with no flash and it was VERY heavy... Do the math...  Light years from the digi cams we have today - well "we" don't have them but about everybody else has them ;o) There are more but - HEY - I can't fill my blog with pics. There will be more in the future so I need the space ;o)
BEAUTIFUL prickly vintage looking photos though - THANX Niklas!
Ok, Enjoy!

Better than quietness

Hey.
As I've mentioned in a few posts now, I'm working on finishing my new demo "The Summer of Fallen Miss Takes". I just finished one of the poppiest tunes I've ever created to this day... I'm also working on a surprise for you all. We'll just have to wait and see when it'll be done. I'm not even sure that it will work out. It's a complicated thing at the moment and some of you might not even like it ;o)
I'm also planning two cooperations. To little has happened yet to mention them more but they're there.
Otherwise?
You could hop over to the label Smalltown America's homepage and read an
interview with my friend Rocky O'Reilly from the best band ever - Oppenheimer. He's a great friend and fan of mine and has so kindly mentioned me in this interview. I bet some of you think - no biggie - but it warms my heart :O)
Ok - that's all for now and it's not much but it's something.
Better than quietness...

Going Blank Again

Except from it being one of the greatest CD:s released in the history of music thus far it's also the expression of me at this point in my life... I'm totally losing my self-image. That's how powerful alienation can be. I'll explain myself a little better.

A lot of great things have been happening to me recently. All of it's got to do with my music and getting the attention from different places. Getting the attention from different places that you didn't expect to get attention from is a self-esteem boost. Gradually you find yourself leaving the "close-to-bitter-and-for-yourself-and-others-invisible" person behind. Blossoming. Happy.

This is great to feel but it's also addictive. The need for confirmation. This need is particularly strong if you don't have the backup and support from the people close to you. And these days I have about three or four…

Basically it's weird being around a big bunch of people, people you thought where a part of your alliance and no one asks, congratulates or even mentions the fact that your second gig ever will be opening for Juliana Hatfield AND getting paid for it (sorry long sentence). The thing that is really hard for me to understand is HOW people can do so?!? I've always tried to be encouraging to the ones I consider friends and a main thing there is to be supportive and glad for them when something good happens to them. Basically - I'm always interested in my so-called friends or acquaintances whereabouts and find it common sense to be interested in their work or life in general.

All in all. This is when you realize that you can have whatever BIG news happening around you but if the people in your everyday life totally ignore you or don't care or whatever it is that makes them alienate you from socialization and encouragement - then you loose your self-image. You go blank. Again.

We are - whatever anyone "strong" and "secure" would contradict - the product of the world around us. The world around us is constantly changing and beings change with it. I guess I'll have to wipe out all that is my self to not be affected but then we wouldn't have my music, right?

Maybe me going blank again will fuel yet another great gathering of songs. For the time being I'll tape a portrait of myself to the mirror until the day comes that I can see myself with true and flawless eyes. Right now they are just like Ride's CD cover - two cucumbers…

David, Oppenheimer, Futia and Mango - HEART.

Love to friends,
Sara

Going Blank Again

The Studio Session

Hey!
So I got home Thursday the 31st and have been trying to go back to ordinary rhythm (staying up LATE, not sleeping until noon and eating properly…).
The studio sessions went slow but were really surprising! The wonderful
Magnus Josefsson AKA Mango is one hell of a guy and it's been great getting to know him! He has a great ear and a good understanding when I want to try stuff out. He also has good taste in instruments, microphones and amplifiers. Niklas is the guy owning the studio. He has this awesome taste in keyboards, synthesizers and organs. Great musical ear as well and I would love to let him have a go on my songs if he wishes to!
The surprising thing was "Lies of Justice House" (download original version here). We decided to do a remake of it 'cause I haven't been to satisfied with it mainly because I felt that it had a sketchy feel and the drums were annoying… Now it is a MONSTER. Deep and dark synthesizers and bubbly keys mix together with a new drum pattern I created… It could actually turn out to be danceable one day! David thought it sounded Peter Gabriel/Kate Bush and I got scared. I thought it sounded like the Knife and got REALLY scared. Not that I don't like the Knife or Peter Gabriel/Kate Bush but I don't want people to think I'm a The Knife or Peter Gabriel/Kate Bush wannabe ;o) I actually don't own a single recording by them. Well one Peter Gabriel and two Kate Bush but no the Knife... I downloaded the Knifes remix of Stina Nordenstam's "Parliament Square" and that was quite cool. Actually I get nervous when compared sometimes in a good way and sometimes not (not that often though).
We had a go on "At Least Like Melissa" as well but it's much to fresh to have a vibe to yet…
There is also this one song who none of you have heard before - "Where Shooting Stars Go". It's an old song - from about 2002 and I really feel it deserves to be heard so we'll be working A LOT on it next time!
Now that I'm home again I think I might start to finish my new demo. The working title and I think the title to be is "The Summer of Fallen Miss Takes". We'll just have to wait and see how it turns out and when it turns out ;o) I already have artwork for it!!!
I may have pictures from the Forfey Festival soon. I'll definitely post them as soon as I get them. Hopefully there will be pictures of some other bands I liked. There were in fact a whole bunch of GREAT bands! More about that later.
Now I'm going out to the kitchen to make myself a big cup of tea.
Hope you all are fine!
Hugs,
Sara

PS - Did I say I just LOVE the band Oppenheimer - THE GREATEST GUYS IN THE WORLD (you know you are too, David ;o)!
